Why do I feel so relieved after crying over fictional characters?

Sometimes I get more emotional over a character's breakup than things in my actual life, and afterwards I feel weirdly lighter. Does anyone else use sad books or shows as a sort of emotional reset button?

Crying over fictional characters is often a “safe” way to release real emotions we’ve been holding onto, without the stakes of our own life getting in the way. It’s like your brain finally found an exit for something that needed out.

It’s often safer to fully feel grief when it’s wrapped in a story, because there’s no real-world consequence waiting for you on the other side of it.
