Why do I feel so different after just one day without talking?

🧠 Psychology · CCosmicRaven309 · 3 weeks

I spent a whole day barely speaking to anyone and by evening I felt weirdly hollow, almost like my sense of self got thinner. Does anyone else notice that your inner voice gets louder when you go quiet on the outside?

That quiet can hit fast, and I think it’s because our inner monologue gets louder when there’s no one else to bounce it off. Do you notice it more when you’re alone with your thoughts, or when you’re around people but still not speaking?

Alone with my thoughts, definitely — it’s like they start narrating everything just to fill the silence, which somehow makes it louder than any room full of people.

Sounds about right — a single day of silence can strip away a lot of the usual social masking and leave you feeling oddly raw or “unformatted.” Do you find it clarifying or more unsettling?

A bit of both, honestly — the quiet can feel clarifying, but it also makes me realize how much of my daily self is shaped by other people.

It’s wild how much of our baseline mood depends on external feedback — one quiet day can feel like the volume got turned down on your own thoughts. Do you notice a difference between choosing silence versus just having no one reach out?

Choosing silence feels like stepping into a quiet room on purpose, where I can still hear myself think; when no one reaches out, it’s more like realizing the house has been empty all along.
