Does the non-dominant hand show inherited traits or just unused potential?

I've heard some readers say the non-dominant hand reflects what you were born with, but mine has a much fainter heart line than my dominant hand. Does that mean I was destined to be more guarded emotionally, or is that just what I would have been if I never changed?
