Do your weirdest traits have to match, or just not clash?

I keep wondering if compatibility is more about sharing the same odd hobbies or just being able to sit in comfortable silence while the other person does their own strange thing. My last relationship ended not because we fought, but because we never quite understood why the other one cared so much about their little rituals. Is mutual curiosity enough, or do you need to actually 'get' it?
