Start with Type: the shape of your energy
The first thing to read is your Type, because it frames everything else. There are five: Generator and Manifesting Generator (the builders, with a defined Sacral centre and steady life-force), Projector (the guide, who sees and directs others), Manifestor (the initiator, who starts things), and Reflector (the mirror, rare, with all centres open). Your Type is not a personality label; it is a description of how your energy is meant to move through the world.
Read your Type before any detail of the chart. A Projector reading itself as if it were a Generator will exhaust itself trying to work like one, so getting the Type right is the difference between the rest of the reading helping you or misleading you.
Strategy: how to engage with life
Each Type has a Strategy, a single practical rule for how to meet the world so that things go more smoothly. Generators and Manifesting Generators are designed to respond — to wait for something to react to rather than pushing from a standstill. Projectors wait for the invitation, especially in work and relationships. Manifestors inform others before they act. Reflectors give a decision a full lunar cycle of about a month before committing.
Strategy is the most testable part of Human Design: you can try it for a few weeks and notice whether life meets less resistance. Read it as an experiment, not a commandment.
Authority: how you make decisions
Authority is where Human Design gets specific about decision-making. It tells you which inner signal to trust when you have a real choice to make. The most common is Emotional (Solar Plexus) authority, where the advice is to wait through an emotional wave and never decide in the heat of a high or a low. Sacral authority is a gut yes or no in the moment; Splenic authority is a quiet, one-time intuition. There are a few more, but you only need to learn yours.
Read Type, Strategy and Authority together as the core operating manual. Almost all of the practical value of a chart is in those three, and a beginner is better off living those well than memorising every other detail.
The nine centres: defined and open
The bodygraph has nine centres, drawn as shapes down the body. A coloured (defined) centre is a consistent, reliable source of that kind of energy; a white (open) centre is where you are receptive and take in the energy of others, which makes it both a place of wisdom and a place where you can be conditioned. For example, an open Sacral takes on the busyness of the people around it and needs to learn when enough work is enough.
Do not try to read all nine at once. Note which centres are defined and which are open, then read the open ones as your main lessons: the areas where you are most impressionable and where you have the most to learn about not borrowing other people energy as if it were your own.
Profile: the role you play
The Profile is written as two numbers, such as 1/3 or 5/1, drawn from the lines of two positions in the chart. Each number is a character trait: 1 is the investigator who needs a foundation of knowledge, 2 is the natural talent that needs alone time, 3 is the experimenter who learns by trial and error, 4 is the networker who moves through relationships, 5 is the practical teacher others project onto, and 6 is the role model who matures in three stages. Your two numbers combine into a single way of moving through life.
Read the Profile last, as flavour over the core. It explains the how of your Type and Strategy: two people with the same Type can feel very different because one is a 1/3 building from the ground up and the other a 4/6 leading through connection.
Putting a reading together
A good first reading follows the order of this guide: Type, then Strategy, then Authority, then the open centres, then the Profile. Read each layer as a whole before adding the next, and resist the urge to jump to gates and channels until the foundation is solid. The chart rewards patience: the basics, lived for a season, teach more than a pile of advanced detail read in one sitting.
