BaZi (八字, "eight characters") is a system of Chinese metaphysics that describes a person's character and destiny from their birth date and time. The year, month, day and hour form four "pillars", each made of two characters — a heavenly stem and an earthly branch — eight in total.
?How is BaZi calculated?▾
You need the birth date, time and place. From these the four pillars (year, month, day, hour), the Day Master, the Five-Element (Wu Xing) balance and the 10-year luck pillars (Da Yun) are derived. On Avatarium the calculation is automatic and free from your profile data.
?What is the Day Master?▾
The Day Master is the heavenly stem of the day pillar — the core of the self in BaZi. It is one of ten combinations of element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and polarity (Yang/Yin), e.g. Yang Metal. The Day Master sets a person's baseline character.
?What is Wu Xing and the five-element balance?▾
Wu Xing (五行) are the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. A BaZi chart counts how much of each element is present. The dominant element amplifies certain traits; an absent one is a growth edge to cultivate.
?What are Da Yun luck pillars?▾
Da Yun are 10-year cycles of destiny. Each decade runs under its own stem-and-branch combination and sets the tone of the period. Your current luck pillar shows what the present decade favours.
?Do I need the exact birth time?▾
For a full chart, yes: without time the hour pillar cannot be built. But the year, month and day, the Day Master and the element balance are computed without it. An exact time adds the hour pillar and refines the reading.
?How is BaZi different from Western astrology?▾
Western astrology works with planets and zodiac signs from the positions of celestial bodies, while BaZi works with the Chinese calendar, stems, branches and five elements. They are two independent systems; on Avatarium you can compare them in one reading.
