What is Leela

Leela (Sanskrit "play") is an Indian practice of self-knowledge on 72 squares described by Harish Johari. The point is not to "win" but to reflect: each square is a state of consciousness, and where the die leads mirrors your inner path. Arrows (virtues) lift you, snakes (vices) return you to lessons. The goal is square 68, Cosmic Consciousness.

🎲 How to play — in short

  1. Set an intention. A question or theme you enter with. Without it Leela is just Snakes & Ladders; with it, a mirror.
  2. Be born on a six. To enter the board you must roll a 6. Every 6 earns another roll.
  3. Move and read the square. You stop where you land, and the guide reads that square through your intention.
  4. Arrows lift, snakes return. 9 arrows (virtues) raise you, 10 snakes (vices) drop you to lessons.
  5. The goal is square 68. Cosmic Consciousness. Reached by the arrow from 54 or an exact roll.

💡 Where the game and growth are

The die gives chance — you give meaning. The same arrows and snakes recur: your patterns made visible. The guide ties the square to your intention and your Destiny Matrix, asks a question — and when you answer honestly, you receive a reflection of what you did not name. The work happens not in the roll but in your answer. Note what resonates — the path across the board becomes a map of your inner life.

❓ Frequently asked

What is Leela and where does it come from?
Leela (Sanskrit लीला — "play", "divine play") is an ancient Indian board practice of self-knowledge on 72 squares. It is the ancestor of Snakes & Ladders, but with the opposite intent: the goal is not to win but to see yourself. The modern rules were recorded by the Indian artist and tantric Harish Johari in "Leela: The Game of Self-Knowledge" (1980), drawing on a tradition centuries old. Each square is a state of consciousness; the die is called the "die of karma".
How do you play?
You set an intention — a question or situation you enter the game with. You roll the die. To be "born" onto the board you need a six. Then you move forward; wherever you land is read through your intention. Arrows (▲) lift you up — these are virtues; snakes (▼) bring you down — vices and unlived lessons. The goal is to land exactly on square 68, Cosmic Consciousness.
Why do you need a six to start?
The six is the spark of "birth": until it falls, your token waits unborn on square 68. Every six earns another roll. But three sixes in a row "burn" — they cancel, and you move only on the fourth roll. Four or more do not burn. The rule teaches that excess energy without measure rolls you back.
Where is the self-development if the die decides everything?
The die gives chance, but you give meaning. The same arrows and snakes recur — these are your inner patterns made visible. The guide (our AI facilitator) ties the square to your intention and your Destiny Matrix, then asks a question. You answer honestly and receive a reflection of what you did not name yourself. The work happens not in the roll but in the answer.
Can you "lose"?
No. In Leela you cannot lose — you can only not-yet-arrive. A snake does not punish, it shows a lesson; overshooting the goal (squares 69–71) returns you via square 72 back to earth, to rise again more consciously. The value is not speed but self-observation along the way.
What does square 68 mean?
Square 68 is Cosmic Consciousness, the goal of the game. You reach it two ways: by the arrow of spiritual devotion from square 54 — or by a gradual ascent with the exact number. It is the symbol of return to wholeness, to the source it all began from.
